There are four initial states that meditators can experience through guided insight practice. Each of these states of awareness have been found to yield a deeper, more subtle awareness than the previous one. The jhanas themselves are not awakening— they are a skillful means for stilling the mind. They are attainable by anyone who devotes the time and sincerity of practice necessary to realize them.
